AaVokaSo (short for Aachener Vokalsolist*innen) is a vocal ensemble with twelve singers based in Aachen. Since it was founded in 2024, it focuses primarily on choral music from the recent centuries, with a particular emphasis on premiering new compositions. Its twelve-voice formation offers exceptional sonic versatility from soloistic transparency to rich choral resonance. This versatility is also reflected in the ensemble's collective mindset, where each member contributes individually to shaping the artistic and conceptual outcome.
September 2025 – Schattenspiele
Vocal music in the contrast between beauty and danger
New compositions by Andy Janssen, Aljoscha Ristow, and Nima Pournaghshband,
as well as works by Francis Poulenc, Stephen Hough, and others
How can we preserve a sense of togetherness within a world full of uncertainties? In their current concert program Schattenspiele (Shadow Plays), the twelve singers of the vocal ensemble AaVokaSo (short for Aachener Vokalsolist*innen) explore this question – through vocal music that reveals contrasts: between everyday life and exceptional situations, between beauty and danger.
At the heart of the program are commissioned compositions by Aljoscha Ristow, Andy Janssen, and Nima Pournaghshband (Maastricht, Aachen, and Cologne), which engage with these topics and reflect on them from various perspectives – sometimes personal, sometimes global.
New compositions and existing works will enter into dialogue, creating a musical exploration of vulnerability, hope, and togetherness. Enhanced by scenic elements, the concert invites the audience to discover new perspectives and to seek their own ways of shaping a sustainable future.
Conductors: Johannes Honecker and Aljoscha Ristow
